For individuals, building relationships online may be easy. For brands that have something to sell, messaging tends to focus primarily on providing information about products and services, and asking for the sale. Is that how to make a new friend?
Building Relationships Online, Why Is It Important?
Building relationships, either online or offline, is the start of building the trust of your audience. Are you helping them to solve their problems and not asking for a sale? The sales will come after the trust has been built, and the realization that you can help elevate their business goals. This starts with a few key conversation starters with your potential audience on social media platforms.
Having Conversations on Social Media
Are you unsure how to start a conversation on social media? These 3 simple and often overlooked steps are going to get you involved in discussions, building your social relationships, and making new friends (which yes, will lead to sales if you are engaging genuinely, and adding value.):
Think of the Like or Favourite as a wave to someone you know as you pass by. On social media, it means you see the item that a friend has posted, and are acknowledging it and moving along.
Commenting can be compared to a quick stop to chat with a friend, acquaintance or even a stranger. On social media, I have seen your post, read it, and have something valuable to add to it. Perhaps a simple “great post” or “I agree with you!.” Or a more in depth insight.
During our quick chat, you might have mentioned a new restaurant that opened around the corner that I wasn’t aware of. I then feel inclined to tell my friends about the information you have shared with me. On social media, if I like what you have posted about this new restaurant, and believe others would enjoy it as well, I share it with my friends.
Recap: Having Conversations on Social Media Focuses Around These 3 Steps:
- Like = Wave
- Comment = Quick chat
- Share = Tell others
It really is a simple process, and often not thought about or initiated in order to build those valuable relationships online.
