How to find your customers on social media

March 4, 2017 by Chris Gilmer

how to find your customers on social mediaSome of us were unlucky enough to remember life without social media. That time when our smaller businesses didn’t stand a chance against those corporate giants. Well this is a much different time. A time where 83% of female internet users and 75% of male users have social media profiles. But best of all, they are looking for you. Reading your reviews. And monitoring your competition.

Social media is the best and most valuable channel for small to mid size businesses for acquiring new customers and engaging existing customers. Not only is it (relatively) free, but if you’re doing the right series of things the wins will be all yours. First things first, how do you find your customers on social media?

Identifying who your ideal audience is

First we start with identifying what your ideal customer looks like. Get down to the basics here. Developing buyer personas. Where do they live? Where do they work? What industry are they in? How old are they? What do they enjoy doing in their free time? Some of you might be thinking, “Hey, this has nothing to do with my business!” It has more to do with your business than you think. Unlike you, your customers could care less about your business. That is, until you prove to them that you are worthwhile to do business with. Find out who your customers really are, listen to their pains, solve their problems, and they will be yours.

Creating engaging content

If you have not set up your business accounts on social media, now is the time to do that. This is the biggest part of how to find your customers on social media. This is the part when you start to engage with them on social media, sharing relevant content that speaks directly to their needs.

If you run a business that helps small business owners with income tax, you’re going to want to start sharing or writing articles on what these business owners can do throughout the year to prepare themselves for tax season, how to organize receipts, how to get a jump start on the tax season, how to hire professional accountants that specialize in small business, and what issues can arise after tax season.

You’re going to want to post regularly to build up your profiles. This allows for your customers to see what you’re all about, and reinforces that you are the professional they need.

Paid lead generation

Posting organically on your social media channels to find your customers on social media is one thing, paying to increase your exposure is another. Paying to get your message out on social media and reach your targeted social audience is a highly effective way to cast a larger net, pulling in those who may have never come across your valuable content.
